Having adequate lighting installed in your home is always a great upgrade and never a regret. The biggest question is what type of lighting to have installed and where to install it.
Chandeliers are great over tables and hanging from high ceilings. Not to mention, a chandelier will also give style and elegance to any room.
Low voltage lighting is often used for lights installed in, under or above cabinets due to the wiring being able to be exposed, and its easy to use plug-and-play feature. Low voltage lights are also often used on adjustable, protruding wall lights that illuminate pictures or paintings. Track lights, pendant lights and recess lights can come in low voltage versions as well. Low voltage fixtures are more expensive initially but they have lower life cycle costs. They also produce a nicer light, with warmer, brighter and more vibrant colors. There are many different varieties of MR-16 bulbs to choose from. The bulbs are longer lasting, they typically have a 5000 hour life or better. You will get better energy savings with this technology.
Pendants are great in kitchens, either over a bar area or counter space. They can also be installed in living rooms or dining rooms over tables. They dress up the overall appearance of a room and add style and flair to the rooms decor, not to mention they are great for performing tasks that require a lot of light.
Recess lights are the most popular type of lights being added to residences these days. The new recess lights on the market, that we prefer are the LED type. They too, like the fluorescents use very little wattage, about 20% of their predecessor, the incandescent. They now also have wall-wash trim kits that can be installed on LED recess lights to illuminate that picture or painting on the wall that deserves a spot light. The good news is, if you have existing incandescent recess lights, they can easily be converted to LED using the same housing. This upgrade will cost you initially, however this investment will be made up soon after on your utility bill due to the limited wattage used. Last but not least, this will be a great effort you will be making on another green solution for your residence.
Sconces are great in any room of a residence, they’re also great to have in a stairwell. These too can liven up the room’s decor and add the final touches to any room’s style. These lights are typically halogen or incandescent but can also be found in fluorescent and LED, and are nice when controlled by a dimmer.
Under cabinet lighting also known as task lighting is great for any task where lots of concentrated light is needed. Paperwork or arts and crafts at your desk, preparation of food at your kitchen counter, etc. These lights typically utilize fluorescent or LED type lamps but can also be found with halogen or incandescent lamps if that is your preference.
